Rotarian PHF Vana Prewitt , member of RCGI Satellite Club, is recovering in a Rehab Centre in Florida, from a serious fall at home in Saint Lucia.  Vana was air ambulanced out to the US as her injuries were so severe.  She has undergone multiple surgeries and has shown amazing resilience which is why she could leave hospital.  Please join me in wishing Vana a speedy recovery.  She will likely not be able to return to Saint Lucia for several months.

We also wish PP Dahlia Garia speedy recovery from knee surgery in Florida.

Rotary South Lime at Kalime - Celebrate Founders Day
In recognition of Rotary's 113th Birthday PP Lisle sent out an e-mail to members reminding them of the significance of February 23rd.  Founders Day as it is referred to, marks the day the Paul Harris and three friends established the first club in 1905, that would become Rotary.  Established for the purpose of gathering professional and business persons in fellowship, Rotary has evolved into one of the largest service clubs in the world.  Rotary is one of only two service organizations with a permanent seat at the UN which is testament to the role that Rotary plays worldwide in building peace and preventing and resolving conflict.
The "lime at Kylime" was Rotary Souths' marking of Founder's Day.  Appropriately it focused on Fellowship

There was food and drink and loads of good fellowship.  Although the photographer forgot to take pictures, there was a fair turnout by Rotarians and prospective members in the South. Conflict - Peace
How Do You Resolve Conflict?
As February (Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution Month) winds down, it is a good time to think back on how much we did or even thought of doing to help reduce or eliminate conflict and to build peace in the last year, or even in the last month;  conflict at home, conflict in the work place, conflict in your Rotary Club, or conflict in the world.

The following was taken from a Blogg by Joyce Marter.  I think you will find it both interesting and useful as we face conflict in every facet of life in a world that seems to breed conflict.

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude.” — William James

Conflict is a normal and natural aspect of relationships. As human beings, we are primed to respond to stress with a “fight” or “flee” response. Often, neither of these choices is appropriate. Therefore, we need to find a way to address conflict that is direct and assertive, while also respectful and diplomatic. Some people fear conflict and go to great lengths to avoid it, which can backfire and lead to emotional, relational and medical problems. If handled effectively, conflict can be an opportunity for learning, growth and positive change.

Nelson Mandela said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”

Sustainability - Meeting of February 20th
Rtn. Jayne Pilot Speaking on Sustainability
"Efficient, compliant management systems pave the road to sustainability through integration and automation"
On Tuesday February 20th, we were privileged to have as our guest speaker, Jayne Pilot who is visiting a friend in Saint Lucia and who kindly agreed to come along and speak to our members and friends on the topic of sustainability.  Jayne took us through her life's work in the field of medical waste disposal where she has been at the vanguard of driving change in Canada and North America.  The public recognition that human waste, if not properly disposed of can, and does spread disease and medical waste can both spread disease and create dangerous pollution was a major  achievement for this waste management crusader.

The collection of used diabetic needles at pharmacies along with unused drugs such as antibiotics etc., was another breakthrough for Jayne as she campaigned for safe disposal of potentially harmful waste across Canada.

Jayne argues that proper waste management is a major factor in driving sustainability (the DS Factor).  Efficiencies can and should be extracted from every facet of our processes, Jayne suggests.  The conversion of waste into energy for example, both eliminates the waste safely (using modern incinerators designed to eliminate or neutralize harmful emissions) and also produces energy that can in turn generate power.

There is no doubt that we can learn a great deal from what we heard and we can surely find a useful community service project somewhere in the subject matter.  Many thanks to Jayne Pilot for sharing with us.
In the "read more" section see more images of the meeting including IPP Astrid thanking Jayne and President Angela exchanging our trading banner.
We were honoured that Rtn. Greg and Vi Jongeling from RC Brookings, South Dakota joined us again and wish them bon voyage as the return home this week end.  Also great to see PP Brad Paul; PP Malcolm Charles; PE Soraya Warner-Gustave; Rtn Sean Devaux from RC Saint Lucia; PP Peter Douch - a regular visitor when in SLU and PP Mike Thom.  We were also delighted to welcome Barbara Vargas; Becky Jno Baptiste and Ty Roberts, guests of PP Lisle, IPP Astrid and Rtn. Marie Antoinette.

Vocational Talks in Schools

The week starting 12th February 2018, was a busy week for the vocational committee. There were three sets of career talks done in three different schools.

On Wednesday, 14th February 2018 Rtn. Lenny Cumberbatch and Mrs. Joanne Cooper, a friend of Rotary gave career talks to Form Five students at the St. Joseph’s Convent on their respective careers. Rtn Lenny is the Food and Beverage Director at Windjammer Landing Resort and Mrs. Joanne Cooper is a Partner with the Chartered Accounting firm of PFK. The two were accompanied by PP Lisle Chase who introduced them and first spoke on Rotary and the core values that we uphold.  PP Lisle also introduced the Club’s signature project for this year which is Road Safety.  The students were impressive in attitude as they listened attentively to the topics on the agenda.

On Thursday 15th, PP Lisle accompanied Rtn Lenny once again and on this occasion, they linked up with PP Peter Douch from RC Wimborne, UK (formerly RC Saint Lucia South and RC Dominica) at the Entrepot Secondary school where they addressed the third form.  Lenny spoke on the value of hard work and dedication and Peter on the accounting profession.  Once again PP Lisle Introduced the values of Rotary and the Road Safety Project.

On Friday16th, Vocational Chair and Secretary Elect Trudy O. Glasgow, an attorney-at-law along with a friend of Rotary Dr. Judith Harvey, a civil engineer gave career talks in the Corinth Secondary school. This project is in its fourth year at the Corinth Secondary School, and every February the school counsellor, Ms. Tessa John-Guerra, reaches out to the Rotary Club of Gros Islet and invites members to give career talks. A warm reception from Form Three students, who were engaging and asked lots of questions, made the experience for the two ladies very enjoyable.
