Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

September is Basic Education & Literacy Month

Education Breaks the Cycle of Modern Slavery

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

While many people would like to think that slavery was a tragedy of the past, the truth is that it still exists today, with up to 46 million people enslaved worldwide.

The Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS) has a strategy for fighting this horrible problem, working at the local level.

“It’s this Rotarian attitude – you give them a problem and instead of throwing their hands up in dismay, they start chipping away at it piece by piece,” says Carol Hart Metzker, a member of the action group. “Maybe slavery won’t be solved in my lifetime, but in two more years, we’re going to have a whole hamlet free.”

The students learn to use a computer, which is also used to document the project.   Article continues - read more

Week Ended September 1st 2018
This has been another Fantastic week for Rotary.  I will start the story today with the news that Past District Governor Milton Inniss of Barbados has been Designated by the Government of Barbados as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.  We all join in congratulating PDG Milton for this great honour.  Very well deserved and we know that not just Barbados, but the rest of the Caribbean will be well served by this dynamic force.

PDG Milton served as District Governor in 2015/2016 and has been active as District Trainer, District Foundation Chair and many other positions.  He has been a pillar of Rotary in District 7030.

PDG Milton awaits the approval of his designation by the UK Government at the time of writing.

Rotary Satellite Club of Saint Lucia Holds Formation Meeting

On Wednesday August 30th President Soraya Warner Gustave of the Rotary Club of Saint Lucia saw the execution of her priority number one for this Rotary Year, came to fruition.  With a turn out of 23 past Rotaractors all eager to be a part of the creation of the new Rotary Satellite Club of Saint Lucia, the elections were held under the supervision of PP Timothy James, PP Konrad Wagner, PP Selma St. Prix, President Soraya Gustave Warner and AG Lisle Chase.
The Leadership of the soon to be recognized Satellite Club, sitting in the photo are:
Chair Tzarmallah Haynes-Joseph (3rd from Right); Chair Elect Lisa James (4th from Right); Secretary Keisha Alfred (2nd from Left); Treasurer Steward Mooney (Left); Director Service Projects Uriah Hunte (2nd from Right); and Club Administration Director Raul Joseph (Right)

Since the election PP Konrad has informed me that the numbers have already increased to twenty seven.  Upon registration, the 27 members will represent approximately a 65% growth in membership of RC Saint Lucia.  Last year, RCGI experienced an 85% growth with the formation of Rotary Satellite Club of Gros Islet, South Saint Lucia, an over all increase in membership island wide of 48 or 70.58%  since August 2017.  Truly a remarkable statistic!
Congratulations to President Soraya and her dedicated team of PP Konrad, PP Timmy J and PP Selma and others who were undoubtedly involved.  But the biggest congratulations got to Chair Tzarmallah and her team for making this club a reality.
Welcome District Rotaract Representative Delon Earl
On September 1st DRR Delon arrived on the same flight as Beenie Man and his entourage who will be performing (article written Sept 1st) at the 2018 Soleil Summer Festival  at Pigeon Point tonight.  DRR Delon is scheduled to visit RCGI on Tuesday at our regular meeting.  He has a packed schedule as he moves on to Martinique on Friday.

The Regular meeting of RCGI took the form of Dip & Chat.  Members spoke on random topics that they drew out of a hat.  We welcomed PP Peter Douch by getting him to klick off.  Peter told us that he had the pleasure of sitting next Big Bird Joel Garner (famous West Indian Fast Bowler) at a lunch in Antigua.  Peter is a huge sports fan.  Sadly Garner was too tall to even notice PP Peter sitting beside him and uttered not a word to Peter for the entire lunch!
Members got on to favourate quotes.  Secretary Trudy sent in a few that I confess I did not hear at the meeting but since no one sent in their quote as requested we will go with the following:
Lenita’s favourite quote: “Man cannot live by bread alone- needs butter, cheese, eggs etc.” by Dr. Lois Parker, Leadership coach
Astrid’s favourite quote: “ I will never dim my glow just because someone is intimidated by my radiance.”
Trudy O.:  “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Rtn Lennie and yours truly recited bits of the Rudyard Kipling poem "IF" ; this was of significance to me as it was passed on tom from my father shortly before he died when I was fourteen.  Lenny did not tell me at the time why it was special to him but I am sure we will share that later.  If you are interested "read more" as I have included the verse below.
Other quotes ranged around "A word to the wise is enough";  "He who poses as a fool is not a fool";  Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see - again passed on to me by my dad.  This was the Segway into the famous Ronald Regan quote - Trust but Verify - frequently quoted by ECCB Governor Sir. Dwight Venner (deceased).
"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart.  Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside awakes"  Carl Jung
"To make a difference in someone's life you don't have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful, or perfect.  You just have to care".  Mandy Hale
All in all some good discussion and levity.

Leadership
For Rotary to survive and to grow we need good leaders.  I have included a few quotes for us to mull over.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
-John Quincy Adams

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”
-John F. Kennedy

“A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.”
-Jim Rohn

“The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on leadership development. There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them.”
-John Maxwell

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” - Sam Walton

"The best leader is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and the self-restraint to keep from meddling with them while they do it." -Theodore Roosevelt
