Rotary's Vision:
"Together we see a world where people unite and take action, to create lasting change - across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves".

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Food Hampers & Gifts for the Needy
On Friday 21st December, 2018, the RCGI assembly line took up its position at the home of Rtn. Jackie Theodore for packing of Christmas hampers for delivery to Soufriere the following day.  Since the passage of Hurricane Tomas in 2013, the Rotary Club of Gros Islet has supported the town by providing hampers to a number of vulnerable families in communities such as Fond St. Jacques, Migny, Ravine Claire and Mocha.  This year, a total of 40 hampers were packed with a number of basic items such as flour, sugar, rice, sardines, oil, ketchup, crackers sanitary and hygiene products, chow mien and pasta.  Of course, there were the absolutely essential toys for the children!The assembly line transformed into a vehicle train on Saturday morning when our hardy Rotarians braved the inclement weather to ensure that the items were delivered.  As always, the recipients were very grateful for the hampers and the fact that they would still be remembered after all this time.
The tremendous efforts of Rtn. Jackie and partner in service, Dexter, Rtn. Ty and friends Lydia and Jules, Rtn. Dame Marie, PP Astrid, PE Joel, Rtn. Becky with partner in service Anselm and guest Ernest, Rotaractors Curtly (President) and Shazia and guest Linda, PP Judy, must be acknowledged.  Amazing energy and team spirit! Special thanks to Rtn. Jackie and partner in service Dexter for the private chef (Chef Pascal) on Friday night and Dexter's delivery man skills on Saturday!!

RCGI is extremely grateful to Simone Mondesir who came out to assist on Saturday morning despite feeling unwell - our very best wishes for your good health!

We hope that these small gestures will in some way bring cheer to those who are so in need of a kind word, bright smile and warm hearts.

Boys Training Centre

The Boys' Training Center (BTC) is a facility which was established to provide care, protection and rehabilitation of vulnerable young boys in Saint Lucia.  The RCGI has built a relationship with the BTC over the past years through sponsorship of a number of programmes at the facility the most recent being the installation of a mobile dental chair, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Last Christmas, 2017, the RCGI sponsored gifts for each of the boys at the Center and this activity was repeated this year with a party for the youths.  The RCGI sponsored a decorated Christmas tree and presents for the boys towards their end of year party.  This activity is important to the Centre as it allows the boys who are in residence at the Centre, usually for years, to acquire social skills and assist in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.  The RCGI is pleased to continue to support the efforts of the Center which seek to enhance and build community and family life and resilience.

As the identities of the youth must be protected, photographs of the event cannot be shared.  However, below is a photograph of the Christmas tree decorated by the youth of the Centre with their long awaited gifts stored beneath.

RI President Barry Rassin's Message

RI President's Message - January 2019

Vocational service can be hard to define, but it is easy to describe: It is simply the point where our Rotary lives and our professional lives intersect. When we put our Rotary ideals to work through our work, that is vocational service.

When I returned to the Bahamas after many years working in health care administration abroad, I realized that my country badly needed a modern health care facility. The resources we had at the time were out of date and inadequate, and people who were unable to travel abroad for care often did not receive the care they needed. Without the experience I had gained in the United States, I could have done nothing to change the status quo. But since I did have that experience, I was in a unique position to have an impact. I knew I could turn my professional path to good and make a career out of improving Bahamian health care.

As Rotary became part of my journey, I discovered that the words of Paul Harris that became the basis of Rotary — that shared effort knows no limitations — were also true for my vocation. I could not bring modern health care to the Bahamas alone. But through partnership, both with the doctors who eventually became my partners in Doctors Hospital and with all the dedicated staff members who worked in the hospital over the years, we could change everything. My goal became a shared goal — and then it became reality.

Rotary emphasizes the dignity of every vocation and the worth of every calling. Remember that the four founding members included no doctors or peacemakers — just an attorney, a mining engineer, a coal dealer, and a printer. From the beginning, the diversity of those vocations gave Rotary a special strength. And that diversity is reflected in our classification system, which aims to ensure that each club represents the full range of businesses and professions that serve each community.

Paul Harris put it this way: "Each Rotarian is the connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and his trade or profession." It was true when he said it and should be equally true now. We only spend an hour or two a week at our Rotary meetings, but most of us spend most of our waking time at work. Through Rotary, those hours are also an opportunity for service: a chance to Be the Inspiration to those we work with, those who work for us, and the communities we serve.
