Happening Week Ended May 19th 2018
19th May 2018 - Starting at the end of the week, we begin this round up with the wedding of Prince Harry to Megan Markle (Duke and Duchess of Sussex).  Now you may not be interested, or you may, in the Royalty but this piece is more about the celebration of Love than Royalty.  Those who listened to Bishop Michael Curry will agree that he drew on the best of mankind to make his singular point - Love is the key to PEACE, to progress, to all things good.  As Rotarians we may not express our passion for humanity as love, but I ask - what else is it my friends?  Read more to better appreciate the message as I have taken an extract from the sermon that does not center on religion but purely on love, and included it below.
On the local scene, Rotarians from RC Gros Islet, continue to show that they care (love) by delivering very much needed breakfast supplies to three Schools.  The photo was taken the Marchand Primary School with President Angela and Rtn. Maggie.
The RC Gros Islet  Reading Club continues at Gros Islet Infant and Primary Schools with members of RCGI combining their Rotarian friends from RC Saint Lucia and with non Rotarians to help children with their reading.  The Month of May is Youth Service month, but it is also Reading month at all schools Island wide.  The members of the Rotary Satellite Club of Gros Islet, South joined in the reading and started off this week at the Choiseul Secondary School.  Rotarians Jenny and Lisa seen here reading to the students.

PEACE

What is PEACE?

Peace is the concept of harmony and the absence of hostility. In a behavioral sense, peace is a lack of conflict and freedom from fear of violence between individuals and heterogeneous social groups.

The following is a letter written to DGE Dominique Vénéré by PP Debbie Roopchand, RC Princes Town, South Trinidad.

Dear DGE Dominique,

I wanted to share with you something that happened to me this week.

On Wednesday I stopped to purchase coconuts from my Vendor Dennis who is a very humble and hard working individual that grew up in poverty.

I hadn't seen him for quite some time and when I stopped he told me he was too depressed to work as his cousin had been shot to death on the "Line".  The Line is a bad area with crime and drugs in San Fernando.  Everyone knows who did the shooting but no one has been arrested.  Dennis was affected by the death as he and his cousins grew up as orphans and were close.

Dennis has tried to lead a law abiding life by selling coconuts for a living.  When he told me what had happened I asked him what is the answer to the problem on the Line and he said to me they need "Peace and Prayer"

I pointed to my Rotary Peace Pin which I was wearing and told him that I wear a Peace pin all the time to remind myself of the need for Peace.  He said to me if he can have a pin like that he would wear it all the time.  I took mine off and pinned him at his cart.  I told him it was a Rotary Peace pin and he was to wear it all the time as we are peacemakers.  His response was he would treasure it.

I wanted to take a photograph of Dennis by his van wearing the Pin but didn't want to invade his privacy.

I share this with you because it reminded that there is always an opportunity to promote Peace.

I thank you as our DGE for making Peace part of your goals this year.

I would be working with my 6 clubs and encouraging them to achieve this goal.

YIRS,

Debbie

Debbie returned today, Friday, May 18th at my request and found Denis proudly wearing his Peace Pin.  He was happy to allow Debbie to take his photograph and even took one with his daughter who sits and waits for him after school.

What a powerful story!  How many of our own...

Rotary District 7030Conference in Suriname 2018
Rotary District Conference in Suriname April, 2018: It was all about the fellowship...
by SE Trudy O. Glasgow

It was my first time in Suriname, Trinidad and at a Rotary District Conference, so I had great expectations. I had often heard that going to a district conference reinvigorated you as a Rotarian. But no further details were ever given. Like child birth, I supposed you had to experience it for yourself to have a full appreciation of what to expect.

It lived up to my expectations; the Planning Committee in Suriname should be commended for an excellent array of activities. We had a packed schedule of cultural experiences, food, drink and having fun. I will reserve further comment on PETS and the District Assembly for another forum.

What did I enjoy the most? The fellowship. I made some new friends from Barbados, Curacao, Guadeloupe, Trinidad, Dominica, St. Kitts, Guyana and Suriname to name a few. The fellowship was strong; for those of us who stayed at the Marriott Hotel, all 22 of us, we had our motto of not leaving anyone behind. The bus came at 7am, which is 6am our time (in Saint Lucia) and we didn't let the bus leave until everyone was accounted for.

Once at the conference, we tended to sit with each other. Our group kept growing to persons staying at other hotels. We had breakfast together in the morning at the hotel, sat together in smaller groups for lunch and dinner. We shared experiences about our time so far in Rotary, our clubs and shared ideas on improving our membership.

The fellowship stood out for me because it does not matter where you are in the world, if you are with good people, you will enjoy the experience even more. The Rotarians I met were warm and friendly. We shared ideas, experiences and our Rotary journey.

It was a proud moment for us, when PP Lisle Chase from our club was introduced as the District Governor for 2020-2021, with Maggie standing proudly by his side. The video that was circulated via WhatsApp, if you haven't guessed, I was the camera person. I spontaneously leapt from my seat in the back and went forward to document the moment.

But I will let the pictures speak for themselves: from the Opening Ceremony with all the flags being represented and anthems sung; to cultural plays and artistic expressions put on just for us. The cocktail party, the gala dinner and the after parties: it was all about fellowship and fun.

To President Elect Lenita, President Elect Soraya, Secretary Elect Julie, Rotarian Maggie and of course District Governor Designate Lisle, thank you for being great travel companions. The next District Conference will be in Guadeloupe (April 2019), after that St. Kitts (April 2020) and  St. Lucia (April 2021). I would encourage you to attend, you will not regret it.
