Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
Rotary's Vision:

"Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change -  across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves".

RI President to Visit District 7030

Barry Rassin

President 2018-19

Rotary Club of East Nassau

New Providence, Bahamas

Rotary International President Barry Rassin and his wife Esther are currently visiting hurricane ravaged District 7000, Puerto Rico where he celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of San Juan on August 4th.  We join in congratulating the Rotary Club of San Juan on the occasion of their Centenary.  In their own words they are the oldest continuously operating Rotary club south of the tropic of cancer! Our own District Governor Dominique Venere was in attendance to celebrate with Rotarians in San Juan.   President Barry ceremonially pinned District Governor Juanita Valentin Morris at the centenary celebration.

From there, Barry and Esther head to Guadeloupe, the home of District 7030 Governor Dominique Venere,  where they will attend a gala dinner on August 6th,  to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation.

It is a great honour for us in District 7030 that the RI President will visit us.  Those of you who have been around for a while will know that it is not often that our District has been graced with the presence of a sitting Rotary International President.

On Tuesday August 7th President Barry and Esther will travel to the Commonwealth of Dominica, in a show of solidarity with fellow Rotarians who have been in the trenches working to assist in the recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria devastated the island last September as a Category 5 storm.  Barry and Ester will be the guests of honour at a dinner that will be hosted by District Governor Dominique Venere under the management of Assistant Governor Sammy Wyke.  There will be calls on the leadership of the island and visits to areas of devastation as the President gets a first hand view of the humanitarian needs of the island.

Back in 2010 when Haiti was devastated by the last major earthquake, killing almost half a million people, now President Barry was at the forefront of the Rotary response to the devastation in Haiti.  He has seen the pain and suffering of the people of Haiti and he has committed that in his year as president of Rotary International he will give his support to the District 7020 initiative to bring potable water to every Haitian resident.  This partnership between the government of Haiti and Rotary was announced at the RI Convention in Toronto in June this year by the President of Haiti, Rotarian and Major Donor, Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant,

and by PDG (District 7020), Jeremy Hurst.  PDG Jeremy made the stunning and moving announcement that Rotary will partner with the Government of Haiti to bring potable water within easy reach of every Haitian resident by the year 2030.

I am proud to be a Rotarian - are you?

August is Membership & New Club Development Month

RI President Barry Rassin puts members front and central in the strategic plan to develop Rotary.  District Governor Dominique said in her address to PETS at the District Conference  If we want to keep our members, we must take care of them, we must listen to them, we have to talk with them, share, explain, we must make them want to be Rotarians”.
President Barry also said “If you want to build a better world, you have to awaken the souls of your Rotarians – to their own ability, and their own potential, and to the longing inside each and every one of us”.

August is Membership and New Club Development month, so what are we going to do to attract new members?
Can you tell your friends and acquaintances what the value proposition is for being a member of a Rotary Club, and in particular, the Rotary Club of Gros Islet?  Maybe you can start with some of the following:

Being a member of a Rotary Club, I -
  1. Make new friends
  2. Build my business contacts
  3. Find opportunity for personal growth
  4. Develop as a leader
  5. Develop public speaking skills
  6. Become a member of communities that I would not otherwise even know about
  7. Am exposed to continuing education
  8. Have the opportunity to serve and give back
  9. Have learned that I can do so much more than on my own because many hands make it possible
  10. Have fun
  11. Meet great, like minded people all over the world
  12. Am supported by diverse people with integrity, high ethical values who are leaders in their own field
This is by no means exhaustive but it is a start.
This month you are encouraged to think about who you can bring into Rotary, so develop a plan, identify your target group, invite people to come to meetings, follow up with them and make them feel like you really care about them.  Invite them back!
The August issue of The Rotarian has an article on Attracting young members to Rotary.
