When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. We’ve also led the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. As part of our celebration of the Foundation’s centennial, we’re honoring 20 global grant projects with special recognition. The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

RCGI Satellite - South June 22nd 2017
On Thursday June 22nd RCGI Satellite - South met at the NSDC in La Touney, Vieux Fort.  Seventeen persons attended the meeting which was chaired by Jenny Chicot-Louisy in the absence of Shermie James-Darchiville, who had a work commitment in Castries.

The opening invocation was carefully chosen by Jenny and recognized the diversity of Rotary.

The group had open and cordial discussions about Rotary in general with PP Omar Davis presenting on the Object of Rotary.  Omar also stressed on the fact that this was all about SERVICE to our community and to the world in general.

The issue of meeting time and place was settled: Every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at the NSDC unless changed by written notice.

The Meeting discussed potential projects and persons were asked to come up with project proposals before the next meeting which is scheduled for July 6th.  A Chess in Schools Project was discussed as well as work on the Laborie market.  The realization that we can make a difference stimulated and motivated the attendees.

The first fundraising raffle raised $100.  What a great start!  Dr Ram won the raffle and we all toasted Rotary the World Over.

At the end of the meeting, eight persons completed the commitment forms which makes the formation of the Satellite Club a reality.  Other attendees chose to do some more research before committing.

Rotary & Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation $450 Million to End Polio

Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announce $450 million commitment to end polio

ATLANTA, Ga. (June 12, 2017) – Today in Atlanta Rotary President John Germ and Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, announced a commitment of up to $450 million to support the eradication of polio.

To an audience of nearly 40,000 Rotary members attending the humanitarian organization’s annual convention, Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation renewed their longstanding support for ending polio – a paralyzing, life-altering scourge on the verge of becoming the second human disease ever to be eliminated. Rotary committed to raise $50 million per year over the next three years, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the Gates Foundation. This expanded agreement will translate into $450 million for polio eradication activities, including immunization and surveillance over the next three years. This critical funding helps ensure countries around the world remain polio-free and that polio is ended in the remaining three endemic countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and RI President John Germ announce new pledges toward the polio eradication effort at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta.

Respect, Tolerance , Rotary

As I sat in the opening ceremony of the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, unwittingly spreading the evil virus that had so firmly attached itself to my operating system, I had cause to reflect on the captioned words.

As the flags of the world were presented, lead by the flag of the United States of America, accompanied by an absolutely beautiful rendition of the American national anthem, I was moved by the powerful and meaningful words that exemplify that great nation.  So often, I like many of you, see only the political conundrum that is portrayed in the media day in and day out and in addition to being totally bemused by the goings on, we form hard views and strong opinions of the actors involved.  This is understandable as we are all affected by decisions taken, or not taken at the highest levels in the political chain of command.

We loose sight at times of those words -"tolerance", "respect" and "Rotary".  As Rotarians, we work for world peace as one of our areas of focus.  In order to achieve world peace, we must  respect the views of others and be tolerant of our differences, unless of course we are dealing with radical terrorist ideology or views and opinions that are blatantly wrong and a danger to society, when we should all stand up against such wrong.

There are current affairs issues that we may well hold differing points of view on but this should not cause us to loose respect for our neighbours.  We may not understand the passion of some people to treat the right to own and carry fire arms as sacred.  So much damage has been done to Rotary over the strong views on this topic.  Culture is something that does not change easily and we, as Rotarians should be at the forefront of being understanding, respectful and tolerant.

I was incredibly moved as each flag of District 7020 and 7030 was paraded on that stage.  With immense pride, I reflected on the strength and diversity that makes our Districts stand out.  Yet that very pride gave way to the knowledge that we as Caribbean people, as Caribbean Rotarians,  have a great deal of work to do to cement the virtues of "tolerance" and "mutual respect" as the bedrock of our societies.  As Rotarians, we are called upon to set the example to those who may not have the education or who have been raised with racial and other prejudices.  Friends, there is no room for these prejudices in the family of Rotary, it is up to us to ensure that we are genuine examples in our societies.

What is Rotary
As we seek to expand our Rotary family I include this page from the RI website for ease of reference.  I remain hopeful that I will receive all of the email addresses to send the bulletin to interested potential members.
