When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. We’ve also led the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. As part of our celebration of the Foundation’s centennial, we’re honoring 20 global grant projects with special recognition. Learn more about the projects using our interactive map.

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

PETS & Conference Experience
DGE Waddy Sowma.  At the head table: DRR Everestus JnMarie, PDG Lara Quentrall Thomas (District Trainer) GG Roger Bows, DRR Elect Kezra Lashley and DGE Waddy(standing)
PDG David Edwards
District Governor Roger Bose

As the Rotary year 2016/2017 draws rapidly to a close, the Presidents Elect for 2017/2018 along with Secretaries Elect and Incoming Assistant Governors were given the opportunity to learn from the incoming leadership team for the District and align the strategies and plans of the clubs to enable the District and ultimately the RI objectives.

District Governor Roger Bose opened the conference and pointed out that this was the first ever joint District Conference in 7030 that included Rotary and Rotaract (the Rotaractors were late so missed this introduction).  He also welcomed the Rotarians from the ABC islands who formally transitioned into District 7030 on January 1st 2017.  This was a tumultuous welcome as everyone in the room joined the welcome.

DG Roger urged the club leaders to take advantage of the wealth of Rotary knowledge and experience available by connecting with the Past District Governors and District leaders and fellow Rotarians as many were vastly experienced.

District Rotaract Representative Elect then made brief welcome remarks.

It was then the turn of District Governor Elect Waddy Sowma from Suriname, and what an entrance he made!  Not being well versed in the current music of the region I believe the song was "Beat It" and did Waddy ever do just that.  He danced about the stage and down the centre isle as the room stood to applaud and join in the dancing.  This is Waddy's theme song and he urged us to analyze the song and draw the analogy to what we are doing as Rotarians.  Emphasis definitely on making our mark; being noticed for the good work that we do.  Waddy asks us all to listen; listen to others and to learn.  Learn from fellowship . The Rotaractors were welcomed at this point - transportation difficulties.
Ian H.S. Riseley - Rotary International President-elect 2016-17

RI President Elect Ian Riseley's address to the Incoming District Governors was beamed in and we listened as he urged the Governors to support clubs and Rotarians to "make a difference" .  There is much emphasis on change and being prepared to change in order to ensure the continuing relevance of Rotary.  RIPE Ian asserts that whatever change that comes, Rotarians will continue to be individuals that uphold the "Core Values" of Rotary.  I will attach the video when it is posted on the District website as many of you readers do not visit websites, or at least infrequently; it is well worth watching.  He emphasizes that we can do so much more to make a difference by working as a team.
RIPE Ian is passionate about Planet Earth and encourages each and every one of us to join the cause to protect our environment.

The PETS covered topics of relevance to Presidents and Secretaries including The Presidential Citation Critera and the District Strategic Plan and Goals for 2017/2018 and to emphasize the change factor, PRID Barry Rassin was beamed in by video to expound on the value of change in ensuring strong Rotary Clubs..  Surprise, surprise, we are not alone - Membership is the single greatest challenge for not only District 7030 but for Rotary globally!  We are encouraged to bolster our public image as a tool to increase membership.
In the rest of this report which you can see by clicking on read more, I have included a collage of photographs in no particular order.  These will help to tell the story of fun, fellowship and information exchange.

The After Party
To coin PDG David Edwards phrase "The Magic of Rotary" or even to use PP Thierry D' Abadie de Lurbe's words "this was a beautiful moment", sentiments that truly apply to such impromptu fellowship events, prompts me to add this little story.

On the flight back to Saint Lucia after District Conference, or at least at the airport in Trinidad, we learned that there was a large group of Rotarians who were on our flight, connecting to Martinique and Guadeloupe several hours later.  I suggested to my wonderful partner in service, Maggie that maybe we could invite them to have a drink at home while they waited for their connection.  We knew there was no food at the house but we had drinks!  So that is what we did.  As a result we met past Rotarian Shermie James-Darchiville who drove up from Laborie to connect with her long time Rotaract friend, now Rotarian PP Thierry, at Vigie Airport.  A group of Rotarians and Rotaractors as well as Shermie and her husband Shern and daughter, came up and we passed a couple of wonderful hours of fellowship on the balcony.  We improvised with some cheese and biscuits and some nuts as this is all that there was available and we made friends.

It is these all too rare but magical moments that strengthen the bonds of friendship and break down the cultural differences that we know exist between the anglophone and francophone territories in our District.  This was the truly magical moment that rounded off what was an outstanding District Conference and PETS for me.

Knowledge is Power - Guiding Principles

Our Priorities

The collective leadership and expertise of our 1.2 million members helps us tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, locally and globally. We are united by common values and vision for the future as we sharpen our focus with targeted specific causes that will reach communities most in need.

Guiding principles

These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Avenues of Service

We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

  • Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
  • Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society. Learn more in  and the .
  • Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest. Learn more in and this .
  • International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
  • Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as , , , and .

Why do we support the Rotary Foundation

"663 million people do not have access to clean water, and one-third of the world's population live without access to a toilet".  These are facts taken from the Chair of the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation, a man with whom Rotarians in Saint Lucia are very familiar, or at least those of us who met him here in 2011 should be.

Past Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee seeks Rotarians support for The Rotary foundation in the following article that I once again took from the ROTI Breadbasket.

The Role of the Chairman in Effective Meetings Part 2
Hopefully I managed to wet your appetite for the follow up to last week's opener.  If you missed last week you can find copies of earlier bulletins on the right hand side of the website http://www.rotarygi.org

WHY WE NEED EFFECTIVE MEETINGS?

Remember: Running meetings is a skill, not something you are born knowing how to do. Just as with any skill, you will get better with practice--and more confident, too!

When someone says, "Nice job. That was a good meeting," what do they really mean? A truly good meeting happens when attention is paid to the four phases of meeting management:

  • Planning for the meeting (Agenda and goals)
  • Setting up the meeting (Logistics)
  • Running the meeting (Chairing/Facilitating)
  • Following up (After the meeting ends...)

In the next sections we will look in more detail at each of these.
